UN expert on slavery urges authorities to investigate the suicide of Alem Dechasa in Lebanon

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, Gulnara Shahinian, urged the Government of Lebanon to carry out a full investigation into the death of Alem Dechasa, a 33-year-old Ethiopian migrant domestic worker who committed suicide on Wednesday 14 March 2012, a few days after she was seen been beaten by men and dragged into a car in the Lebanese capital.  Read More…

Ethiopia resettlement plan falls short on development

When the Ethiopian government asked Thwol Othoy if he wanted to be resettled, he agreed, attracted by promises of a better life – a clinic, school for his children and land to farm.  But he now struggles to feed his family. Late Rains Threaten Food Security in Ethiopia

Migrants left to die after catalogue of failures, says report into boat tragedy

Council of Europe investigator says deaths of migrants adrift in Mediterranean exposes double standards in valuing human life.  The identity of a military helicopter that briefly flew over the migrants, offering them food and water and motioning at them to remain in place only to then fly off and never return, is still unknown.  On the 10th day of their ordeal the migrants drifted up to a large military vessel – so close that the survivors claim those on board were photographing them from the deck as they held up the dead babies and empty fuel tanks in a desperate appeal for assistance – but this too has not been definitively identified.  Read More…
